consumerism, free market jesus, and donald miller

A lot probably could be said about consumerism within christianity.

A lot probably SHOULD be said about this. How do you go about doing this?

- Unfortunately right now the most popular way of communicating information is through the mass production and selling of books.

- I find it ironic how I saw an advertisement on bluefishtv.com for a $30 dvd by donald miller

- Yeah that made me laugh. The mass production and selling of a dvd that probably "challenges our assumptions on the way we look at our Jesus." Unfortunately it is from the same vein as things the dvd is against.

- Oh yeah, personally I think the ciriculum is overpriced. One 60 minute session or two 30 minute sessions and a discussion guide for 30 bucks? Sounds like an easy way out for youth pastors/ college pastors who don't feel like putting the time into teaching.

- Just my thoughts.

Overpriced? Well once again, even in Jesusanity we see the forces of market demand setting the price. What the undiscerning masses of nominal evangelicals seek after gets priced accordingly by the equally undiscerning hawkers of apostasy-lite "curriculum" and the like. Did you know that most of the major "Christian" publishing houses were actually owned and run by non-Christians of the ilk of Rupert Murdoch? What the market wants and is willing to pay for, gets promoted and priced up and slickly marketed and starts a whole new fad. Miller, McLaren, Bell, Warren, whoever.

You made some good points, points worth thinking about. My one comment was on your last thought about it being an excuse for Pastor's not to put as much time into teaching. I don't think there is anything wrong with that neccesarily. As a new youth pastor who originally was trying to create original messages, Sunday School lessons, while leading worship for Sunday morning services for the church, and wednesday night for the youth, I've slowly been learning the hard lesson of using outside resources to cut down on my message prep time. This has been a good thing as it's enabled more time for me to put into relationships, which have far more potential for authentic change than messages. So I guess I would encourage you to not be so hard on Pastors or teachers if they are using outside materials.
